Mark 9:23-24 What do you mean "If I can?" Jesus asked. "Anything is possible if a person believes." The father instantly cried out "I do believe, but help me overcome my unbelief!"
My Thoughts
This man's belief seemed to waver a bit... I think he was saying I do believe, then I don't believe...I so want to believe... Please help me. Jesus did help this man, he healed his son. I am sure that this man never doubted again. I wonder which request Jesus was answering here? The request to cast the evil spirits out of his son ... or the request to help his unbelief? This is the first time I ever though of it this way but I think it may have been the request to help the man's unbelief. What do you think? I believe the man never had unbelief again once the evil spirits were cast out of his son!
I am learning that the way that we can get help for our own unbelief is to learn the scripture and say it out loud. I heard Joyce Meyer say there have been studies that show that we believe what we hear... and we believe what we hear ourselves say more than we believe anything else. So if we believe what we hear ourselves say...and we know the Bible is true...but, we have trouble believing that God can do some of the things His Word says that He can do...then our first step is to start quoting his word out loud over our lives. Couple speaking the scripture and prayer asking God to help us with our unbelief and God will step in and changes us! When we make the effort, God's grace takes over and makes all things possible. Even unbelief!
God did just change this man's unbelief for the moment, God changed this man's unbelief for a lifetime!! God can and will do that for us! What this man had to do is be honest with Jesus and honest with himself. Once he did that Jesus changed his world. And He will change our world too!
